This study examines the tendency of thepublished literature on the Korean language learning strategiesthrough reviewing the papers which have been conducted to date,and tries to suggest direction for future. The materials for thesubject of studies are 29 papers from academic journals and 93theses. This paper analyzes the trend by means of classifying themby publication date, topics, and methodology used in each study. The first dissertation on Korean learning strategies was publishedin 1996 by Seung-hae, Kang. Since the late 2000s, approximately10-20 studies regarding language learning strategies have beenpublished annually. Looking into the sub-themes, ‘the studiesobserving aspects of using learning strategies by language skills’and ‘the development of teaching materials and the teachingmethod utilizing language learning strategies’ have been the mostoften discussed. Nearly half of the reviewed works focus on thesetwo themes. The most commonly used methodology has beenempirical research, conducted through observation, surveys andexperiments, in order to draw meaningful results from research onlearning strategies. In the case of experimental studies, the methodology has beencriticized in that it is difficult to collect enough data to producemeaningful results and to control all variables perfectly. However,these experimental studies on learning strategies clearly accountfor the vast majority of published works. In the study on learningstrategies, the results of field applicability are discussed as key values above all else. Therefore, it is necessary that the studies onlanguage learning strategies should be done on an actual level soas to be applicable learning strategies as the tool for classroominstruction and the development of teaching materials.
