This studyfocuses on the ability of Brazilian learners of Korean to useappropriate expressions and speak politely according to social andcultural contexts of Korean, through analyzing the language andstrategies used in request situations. Korean native speakers arehighly influenced by the social power, which thus affect theirpoliteness strategies. In the absence of friendship, however,Koreans have their strategies highly associated with politenessexpressions regardless of contextual social power. They also tendto use longer request expressions and to ask for permission, whichincreases according to the situation's burden for the listener. Onthe other hand, in the case of Brazilian Portuguese nativespeakers, the level of acquaintance with the listener have moreinfluence on the speaker's strategies than social power. Also,Brazilian learners of Korean situated in the context of the targetlanguage(KSL) use more expressions and strategies than learnersof Korean as a foreign language(KFL) who used limited and fixedexpression. Although KSL learners adopt more expressions, theirlength of stay in Korea seemed not to give influence on theirexpressions. Both groups still display expressions that are highlyinfluenced by their native language. (Kyunghee University)
