The aim of this paperis to explain the functions of the negative question, which is theyes-no interrogative in discourse. The unmarked speech act of theyes-no question is to request for information that the speakerwants to know. But as the interrogative sentences are very oftenused as a polite way of expressing a request, making an offer andso on, the negative question can be adapted pragmatically for thepurpose of performing such speech acts. In Korean, the negativequestion is a means of expressing attitudes, assumptions andemotions of speaker. And it can be a means of leading theconversations, rather than indicates lack of knowledge on the partof the speaker. By analyzing 10 debates of Korean TV programs, this study focuses on the discourse functions of the negativequestion. As the results of analyzing Korean TV debates, thenegative question controls the flow of an argument, or can beused to get the floor in the debate. When considering thefunctions of questioning strategies that convey informationeffectively, the negative question shows that the speaker of oralpersuasive discourse expresses his strong feelings and theassumption that the speaker has expected the reaction of thelistener.
