A Study on Using Language Games to Teach and Learn the Korean Language

Various teaching methods are used in Korean language classrooms to make the language learning interesting and to reduce boredom and anxiety. Language games are one of the methods used for that purpose. Games are very effective in proceduralising the knowledges on language, i.e., in transforming the declarative knowledge into the procedural knowledge in the brains of a language learner. This paper is an attempt to apply games to teaching and learning Korean by adapting them into the teacher’s manuals of the regular Korean language program at the language institute of a university in Korea. In the article the author examines the definition on language games, then make questionnaire surveys in order to obtain information on the game uses in Korean language teaching classrooms. He proposes three principles on which a language game should be formulated and mentions some aspects which should be considered in choosing a language game. On the basis of the questionnaire results the author has composed sample teaching plans which make use of language games. (Inha University)
