The Current Reality and Tasks of Korean·Korean Cultural Competence Assessment in Korea Naturalization Test

This paper aims to seek for the reality and tasks of Korean·Korean cultural competence assessment in the test called Korea Naturalization Test(KNT). KNT is the test for measuring basic knowledge befitting a Korean national; such as understanding of the Korean language, customs and culture. Naturalization applicants should apply this test to obtain the status to naturalize to Korea. The importance of KNT is increased according that the number of applicants are increasing very rapidly. Research questions of this paper are as follows: First, how are the structure and contents of KNT from the viewpoint of Korean language education? Second, what is the problem or limitation of KNT? And how can we make improvement of KNT for some more proper evaluation tool for judging the status to obtain Korean nationality?Through this research we could find that there are some limitations such as the lack of validities, difficulties and types of some questions of KNT. We give some suggestion for the improvement such as asks for collaboration works among interdisciplinary areas including Korean language education. This is initial work to be done by Korean language educators, so the discussion level is not so high. We hope many Korean language educators have concerns about KNT after finding this paper.
