The purpose of this research is to propose an identity of Korean language education as a visualized model that can emerge from being integrated and fused with other related studies by setting up a definition for Korean language education and investigating its interdisciplinary characteristics as an area of study. For this study, the method of systematic review was used to comprehensively analyze all of the research achievements up to date on the disciplinary identity of Korean language education as a foreign language and its related field of studies. There has been an ongoing debate about the disciplinary identity of Korean language education as a foreign language and classification of its related studies for the past decade. As a result, academic status and boundaries of Korean language education have become clearer than in the past. However, existing research did not fully discuss the definition of Korean language education and overlooked its multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary features. Therefore, this research defines Korean language education as “a multidisciplinary field of study that explores different aspects that arise from different theories, conditions, and processes of teaching and learning Korean as a foreign language.” In addition, we conclude that Korean language education is beyond just a simple integration of related studies but also has an multidisciplinary identity that can bring about an emergence of new findings through interdisciplinary research.
