This study conducted perceptual training experiments on Japanese and Chinese learners of Korean in order to examine how the perception of the three-way distinction of Korean stops differs by the learners' native languages and find out whether perceptual training can remove such difference. Before the perceptual training, the patterns of perception appeared the opposite in Japanese and Chinese learners. The Japanese discriminated lenis the best and their distinction ability was relatively lower in aspirated and fortis. However, the Chinese discriminated fortis the best and their distinction ability was relatively lower in lenis and aspirated. After the perceptual training, the distinction ability of both the Japanese and Chinese improved in all phonemes, proving the effects of the training. Especially, the distinction ability of the Japanese improved greatly in fortis, shaping the patterns of perception of the learners of the two countries similar. Through these results, it was possible to verify that perceptual training exerts positive effects on the improvement of phoneme distinction ability.
