This study investigates discourse functions of the Korean form ‘-eun/neun + geos-ida’ which is not explained properly in Korean textbooks and reference books despite its frequent use in written and spoken Korean. Although this particular form has originated from the syntactic construction of adnominalizer ‘-eun/neun’, defective noun ‘geos’ and coupla ‘-ida’, it is now often used as a grammaticalized function word. This study has analysed the usages of ‘-eun/neun + geos-ida’ in various types of texts and identified the eleven discourse functions so far: (1) universal truth or norm, (2) paraphrase or additional information, (3) logical reasoning or conclusion, (4) cause or reason, (5) demonstration, (6) suggestion, (7) exhortation or order, (8) resolution, (9) annoyance, (10) surprise, and (11) saying with confidence or confirmation of fact.
