Leveraging Cultural Background to Teach Vocabulary for Korean Reading

Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening are very basic components of Korean Language Education. It is difficult to rank the four components in the order of importance. Learners learning for general purposes consider “speaking” most important, however, the priority can be very much changed for learners with academic purposes. A survey shows that reading and summarizing books and thesis are considered most important by learners learning Korean for academic purposes in universities. Korean language requirement to study in universities. Therefore, this thesis will focus on how to use cultural background for students to efficiently read and understand advanced level of reading materials for Korean for academic purposes. Also, this thesis is based on the assumption that understanding cultural background can be useful to understand a reading text in a holistic manner, and proper reading requires understanding of “social. cultural background” as well as understanding dictionary definition of words and text. As a first step, I conducted a simple verbal survey to academic students, asking how much understanding of cultural background is required for reading, then discussed the results. Also, required background and cultural knowledge for the reading is defined as concepts. This thesis suggests an actual class example which incorporates the survey results and the defined concepts.
