본 연구는 대학 교양 교육에서 인문고전인 프란츠 카프카의 <변신>을 읽고 토의 후 서평 쓰기를 수행한 사례이다. 구체적으로는 인문학의 이해를 바탕으로 인문고전인 카프카의 작품 <변신>의 의미를 살펴보았다. <변신>의 1장에서는 변신으로 인한 그레고르의 직무 수행 불능의 상황과 그로 인한 가족의 충격이 묘사된다. 또한 그레고르의 의식의 흐름을 따라 변신의 개인적 원인 및 사회적 배경이 암시되고 있다. 2장에서는 가족들로부터 격리되어있는 그레고르의 내적·외적 상황이 묘사된다. 3장은 그레고르의 죽음 및 남은 가족의 새 생활에 대한 암시로 이루어져 있다. 이러한 <변신>의 의미에 대한 미니 강의 후, 학생들은 다양한 주제로 토의를 진행하고, 서평을 작성하였다. 이를 통해 학생들은 인문고전 읽기의 궁극적인 목적에 도달할 수 있었다.
This study is an example of writing a book review after reading and discussing <The Metamorphosis> by Franz Kafka, a humanities classic, in a liberal arts education at a university. Specifically, based on the understanding of the humanities, the meaning of Kafka's <Metamorphosis>, a humanities classic, was examined. In Chapter 1 of <The Metamorphosis>, Gregor’s inability to perform his duties due to the transformation and the resulting shock to his family are described. In addition, following the flow of Gregor’s consciousness, the personal cause and social background of the transformation are implied. In Chapter 2, Gregor’s internal and external circumstances, isolated from his family, are described. Chapter 3 consists of Gregor’s death and allusion to the new life of the remaining family. After this mini-lecture on the meaning of <Transformation>, the students discussed various topics and wrote a book review. Through this process, students were able to reach the ultimate goal of reading humanities classics.
