크리스티안 페촐트의 <피닉스>와 자기 유령화

Christian Petzold’s Phoenix and Self-spectralization

이 연구는 크리스티안 페촐트의 <피닉스>를 분석 대상으로 설정하여 유령과같은 존재가 출현하는 조건을 탐색한다. 이론적으로는 지그문트 프로이트의 두려운 낯설음과 자크 데리다의 유령론을 참고한다. 프로이트는 두려운 낯설음이 친숙하고 편안한 감정의 상태와 낯설고 불안한 감정의 상태를 포함하고 있음을 지적하면서, 이러한 양가적인 감정의 상태가 나타나는 것은 무의식에 억압된 대상이 회귀하는 현상과 관련이 있다고 설명한다. 데리다는 역사의 종언과 함께 과거의 어떤 정신이 누군가에게 상속되는 경우 시간이 탈구되는 현상과 함께 유령이 나타난다고 설명한다. 이러한 유령론의 논의를 따르자면, 유령의 출현은 자아와 타자, 의식과 무의식, 과거와 현재의 구분을 무효화한다. 그런 이유로 유령의 출현과 그에 따른 귀신 들린 상태는 유령화와 함께 자기 유령화를 포함한다고 볼 수 있다. 한편, 이 연구는 본문에서 <피닉스>에 나타나는 유령성의 조건을 신체, 공간, 시간으로 구분해서 살펴본다. <피닉스>의 여주인공 넬리는 나치 강제수용소에서 돌아온 이후 성형수술을 통해 자신의 신체적 변화를 겪는 과정에서, 과거자신이 거주했거나 은신했던 장소에서 은폐된 진실을 확인하는 과정에서, 그리고 과거의 자기 자신을 모방하는 과정에서 서서히 유령과 같은 존재로 거듭난다. 정리하자면, <피닉스>는 신체의 변화, 공간의 변화, 시간의 변화를 경험한 주인공 넬리의 이야기를 통해서 한 인물이 특정 역사적 배경 속에서 유령이 되어가는 과정을 다루는 작품이다.

This study sets Christian Petzold’s Phoenix as an analysis target to explore several conditions under which ghost-like beings emerge. Theoretically, we refer to Sigmund Freud’s uncanny and Jacques Derrida’s hauntology. Freud analyzes the ambivalent state of emotion of uncanny, explaining that such emotion is related to the phenomenon of unconscious oppressed objects returning. Derrida explains that with the end of history, if a spirit of the past is inherited by someone, ghosts appear along with the phenomenon that the time is out of joint. Following this discussion of hauntology, the appearance of ghosts invalidates the distinction between self and others, consciousness and unconsciousness, and the past and the present. For that reason, the appearance of ghosts and the resulting state of ghosts can be seen as including self-spectralizaiton along with spectralization. On the other hand, this study examines the conditions of spectrality that appear in Phoenix by dividing it into body, space, and time. Since returning from Nazi concentration camps, Nelly, the heroine of Phoenix, appears to be a ghost to Johnny by going through a process of physical changes through plastic surgery, by going through the process of destroying the house where she lived in the past or revealing the oppressed truth where she hid in the past, by going through the process of imitating the past self. In summary, Phoenix deals with the process of a character becoming a ghost in a specific historical background through the story of Nelly, the main character who experienced changes in body, space, and time.
