This paper proposes an effective teaching approach for college students in passive constructions translation. The passive constructions can be commonly found in academic reading texts. English learners find difficulty when they translate them into Korean, especially when there is no explicit agent in the sentence such as ‘by + phrase’. To suggest better guidance in the translating process, this study is based on analyzing the errors when translating passive constructions by English learners. When ‘by+phrase’ doesn't need to be explicitly identified in a passive construction, it can be translated into an intransitive meaning. This study investigates the causes of the awkward expressions made by English learners when translating passive constructions into Korean. The findings contribute to enhancing college students’ understanding when they translate passive constructions without an agent into Korean.
