In recent years, Canada’s relations with China have deteriorated. While changing government policy is probably one reason for this worsening relationship, the recent impasses also underscore some significant differences in values, political behaviour and legal practice between Canada and China. These are best exemplified by two very contentious political-legal disputes―the case of Lai Changxing’s extradition and the case of Huseyin Celil’s imprisonment. Through examining these two disputes, this paper tries to formulate a better understanding of this complex relationship.
