This study explores theoretically the relationship between liberal arts and management in Candadian business using Northrope Fry’s idea of garrison mentality. Frederic Winslow Taylor’s scientific management can be menacing to Canadians, including Roger Martin, a proponant of democratic capitalism, for super-efficiency may produce a high likelihood of exploitation and unsustainability. Roger Martin contributes to the business community by exploring the power of narrative and integrative thinking. Narratives and metaphors can be harnessed in order to generate new ideas. In order to build democratic capitalism, it is necessary to limit scale, to introduce friction, to promote patient capital, and to teach for resilience. All these points contrast sharply with most American management theories, which pursue the advantages of scientific management. The Canadian imagination can be mobilized for the purpose of constructing democratic organizational systems. Overall, Roger Martin’s management theory is an attempt to explore the possibility of innovating business organizations and solving problems in business without using a super-efficient model.
