Since the nation“s first television stations in 1952, the television programming in Canada has been strongly influenced by media in the United States, perhaps to an extent not seen in any other major industrialized nation. Most of top 30 television shows have always been American shows from the beginning. As a result, the government institutes quotas for “Canadian Content”, which doesn“t seem to have helped what the government wants to happen. The dependency of English Canada on American shows can be explained as following: the budget for the shows for Canadian networks and its market are far smaller, draining Canadian talents to US; Canadian production values are limited, meaning the networks are not doing good jobs; Canada and US sharing the same language and the time zone leads Canada to depend on US shows; Canadian Content and Point System do not work efficiently; US protectionism plays badly on the Canadian shows; many Canadian shows are made in Canada, but sells as US shows because they are made by US companies; Canadian mind-setting toward American shows also plays a role. However, French Canada in Quebec has successfully created its TV shows with much smaller budget, proving itself the only creativity found in Canada, which, with a huge land and so many talented people, still lets American shows dominate Canadian living rooms.
