A Narrative Analysis of A. Bely’s “Petersburg”

본 논문은 안드레이 벨리의 소설 『페테르부르크』의 서사 구조를 밝히는데 목적이 있다. 우선 주요 플롯과 하위 플롯을 구분하고 그들 사이에는 어떠한 관계가 있는지 분석한다. 이를 통해 우리는 이야기의 종결로 치닫는 서사적 힘과 이를 끊임없이 지연시키는 서사적 힘이 있음을 파악하게 된다. 그래서 이 작품에는 서사적인 힘들 사이의 간섭과 상호 작용이 존재하고 있음을 보이고자 한다. 이들 플롯이란, 1) 아블레우호프의 가족사, 2) 테러조직의 아폴론 살해계획, 3) 니콜라이-소피아-리후틴의 삼각관계, 4) 아폴론, 니콜라이, 두드킨의 환상/환시로 나뉠 수 있다. 또한 이들 사이의 관계는 다음과 같이 요약될 수 있다. A. 1)과 2)는 상호 간섭하면서 서사의 주 플롯을 형성한다. B. 3)은 1)과 2)에 모두 영향을 주는 매개적 플롯이다. C. 1)은 3)을 억압하면서(지연시키면서) 반복한다. D. 2)는 4)를 억압하면서(지연시키면서) 반복한다.

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the narrative structure of Andrei Bely's novel Petersburg. First, we will differentiate between the main plots and sub-plots, and analyze the relationships among them. Through this, we come to grasp the narrative force that culminates in the end of the novel and the narrative force that perpetually delays it. Therefore, we aim to demonstrate the interplay and interference of plots within this work. These plots can be categorized as follows: (1) Ableukhov's family history, (2) the terrorist organization's assassination plan for Apollon, (3) the triangular relationship of Nikolai-Sophia-Likhutin, and (4) the hallucinations of Apollon, Nikolai, and Dudkin. Furthermore, the relationships among these can be summarized as follows: (1) and (2) intersect, forming the primary plot of the narrative. (3) serves as an intermediary plot that impacts both (1) and (2). (1) repeats while suppressing (delaying) (3). (2) repeats while suppressing (delaying) (4).
