미장센과 내러티브를 통해 나타나는 영화 속 경관의 해석

Analysis of Landscapes Presented Through Mise-en-Scène and Narratives in the Movies by Bong, Jun Ho: With a Focus on The Host, Snow Piercer, and Parasite

봉준호 감독의 영화 속 경관이미지는 단순한 기본 배경이 아닌 영화의 주제나 서사와 상호연관성을 가지고 있는 공간이자 감정과 의미의 폭까지 강조, 확장시켜주는 역할을 한다. 본 연구는 봉준호 감독의 영화에서 경관이 미지가 갖는 다양한 역할이 어디서, 어떠한 방식으로 작용되는지 파악하고자 했으며 영화 속 이미지에 적용된 표현형식이 현대 사회가 요구하는 새로운 공간 창출에 기여할 수 있음을 확인해 보고자 하였다. 본 연구는 먼저 이론적 고찰을 통해 연구 주제의 이론적 맥락을 파악하고 적절한 연구 방법과 조사 도구를 도출 하였으며 이 과정에서 '영화'라는 미디어예술을 다루는 영상기호학의 원리를 파악하고 그 속에서 미장센의 역할을 분석하였다. 또한 앙리 르페브르의 '재현적 공간 (representational space)'의 개념을 바탕으로 배경경관의 요소와 속성으로서 가시성, 의미성, 사회성, 권력성, 표상성, 환유성을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 위 분석 내용들을 바탕으로 의미체계와 분석틀, 그리고 영화의 선택 기준을 세운 뒤 봉준호 감독의 영화 중 시대상과 사회적 문제를 핵심 주안점으로 삼았던 <괴물>, <설국열차>, <기생충>을 연구 대상으로 하여 영화 내 경관이미지 속에 내재된 다양한 의미체계를 분석하고 검증하였다. 이와 더불어 이미지들이 연결된 내러티브 구조가 영화뿐만 아니라 경관에 적용될 수 있음을 입증하기 위하여 내러티브 분석을 진행하였다.

Landscape images in the movies directed by Bong, Junho are illustrated as places retaining themes, narration and inter-relationships, functioning to emphasize and extend the depth of emotions and meanings. The landscape images are reproduced through the presentation of the Mise-en-Scene, and are connected to narrative structure via cause and effect processes. This study aims to explore where and how the landscape images are applied in Bong, Junho’s representative movies to find implications in landscape architecture. We examined theoretical backgrounds to draw methods. We selected Mr. Bong’s three famous movies: The Host, Snow Piercer, and Prasite to examine a variety of meanings embedded in the landscape images. We also analyzed the narrative structures containing the various images to draw implications for spatial design and landscape architecture.
