사진작가 김영갑에게 있어 제주도의 공간적 의미 -자전적 에세이집『섬에 홀려 필름에 미쳐』,『그 섬에 내가 있었네』를 대상으로-

The Spatial Meaning of Jeju Island to Photographer Kim Young-Gap - Focusing on His Autobiographical Essay Collections, 『Fascinated by the Island, Obsessed by the Film』and『It was I that was in the Island』–

본고에서는 사진작가 김영갑의 자전적 에세이집인 섬에 홀려 필름에 미쳐(1996), 그 섬에 내가 있었네(2004)에 투영된 제주도의 공간적 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 김 영갑은 1957년 충남 부여에서 출생했으며, 1982년부터 제주도를 드나들며 사진 작업 을 하다가 1985년 제주도에 정착했고, 20년 뒤인 2005년 5월 29일, 6년간의 루게릭 병 투병 생활을 끝내고, 자신이 건립한 ‘두모악’에 잠들었다. 입도(入島)한 지 10년이 지난 시점인 1996년에 출간한 섬에 홀려 필름에 미쳐는 입도의 계기와 입도 초기의 생활상을 담아 놓은, 제주 생활에 대한 중간 점검적 성격의 저술이며, 작고하기 한 해 전인 2004년에 출간한 그 섬에 내가 있었네는 자신의 최후를 예감하고 쓴 책으로서, 제주에서 보낸 20년 세월에 대한 마지막 정리라고 할 수 있다. 제주도는 김영갑에게 있어 사진 촬영을 위한 장소 그 이상의 의미를 지닌 공간이었다. 토박이가 아닌 이방 인의 자리에서 한라산을 뜻하는 ‘두모악’이라는 존재로 자리매김하기까지 제주도는 그 에게 다양한 공간으로 작용했다. 본고에서는 김영갑에게 있어 제주도의 공간적 의미를 ‘소통과 치유’, ‘절연(絶緣)과 수행’, ‘자성예언(自成豫言)과 안식’이라는 세 측면에서 고 찰했다.

This study examines the spatial meaning of Jeju Island which is projected in Photographer Kim Young-Gap’s autobiographical essay collections, Fascinated by the Island, Obsessed by the Film(1996) and It was I that was in the island(2004). Kim Young-Gap was born in Buyeo, Chungcheongnam-do in 1957 and settled in Jeju Island in 1985 after coming in and out of the island frequently from 1982. And 20 years later, on May 29, 2005, he ended his six-year struggle with Lou Gehrig’s disease and passed away in gallery Dumoak he had founded. Published in 1996, 10 years after entering the island, Fascinated by the Island, Obsessed by the Film is a book that contains the reason for entering the island and his early life in there. It was written as the intermediate examination over his Jeju life. Published in 2004, a year before his death, It was I that was in the island is a book written in anticipation of his own end. It can be said to be the last summary of his 20 years in Jeju. Jeju Island was more than a place for photography for Kim Young-Gap. Jeju Island served as various spaces for him until he established himself as the existence of ‘Dumoak’ that means Mt. Halla in his status as a stranger, not a native. This article considers the spatial meaning of Jeju Island for Kim Young-Gap in three aspects: ‘communication and healing’, ‘cutting connections and cultivation’, and ‘self-fulfilling prophecy and rest’.
