수난과 희망

피난수도 대학 음악교육 시론

이 논문은 6․25 전쟁 시기 대학 음악교육을 논의한다. 전쟁 발발 당시 대학의 음악전공 교육은 세 개의 대학-이화여자대학교, 숙명여자대학교, 서울대학교-에서 이루어졌다. 이들 대학은 피난수도 부산으로 이전하여 교육을 계속했으며, 대학의 피난과 전시의 혼란은 대학 음악교육에서 정형화된 설명이 어려운 다양한 양상들을 초래했다. 본 연구는 이 시기의 대학 음악교육이 전쟁의 혼란을 거치고 수난을 겪는 한편, 성장의 단초들 또한 이 시기에 형성되고 있었음을 밝히고자 한다. 음악교육의 틀에 확장이 이루어지고 음악교육의 위상을 높이는 체제의 변경이 이루어진 대학이 있었으며, 피난민이 밀집한 부산에서 가능했던 음악전문가와의 예기치 않은 조우가 음악전공생에게 전쟁 이전에 예정하지 않았던 방식으로 미래의 진로를 개척하는 결정적 기회가 되었음을 구체적인 예를 통하여 설명한다. 기존 연구 문헌, 대학이 발행한 역사기술, 신문 기사, 개인적인 전시(戰時) 기록과 구술 사료의 분석에 기초하여 이루어지는 이 논의는, 다양한 자료에 흩어져 존재하는 전시 대학 음악교육에 대한 정보를 통합하여 당시 음악교육에 대한 이해의 증진에 기여하며, 피난수도 부산에서 이루어진 음악교육의 역사를 통하여 부산문화사의 이해에 기여하리라고 사료된다.

This paper explores music education at the university level during the Korean War. Music majors were offered at three universities - Ewha Womans University, Sookmyung Women’s University, and Seoul National University - when the war broke out in 1950. All three universities were relocated to the newly appointed capital city of Pusan to continue education. This move and the turmoil of the war led to university music education developing in uneven ways, leaving various facets in need of exploration. This paper aims to reveal that even through the disruptions of the Korean War, positive developments were made in music education. In particular, the status of music education within universities rose, and there was a case in which a student majoring in music was able to interact with a relocated musical expert, shaping her future career path in ways not possible before the war. These discussions are based on analysis of previous research, historiographies written by universities, selected newspaper articles, as well as the wartime notes and oral history of Young Ja Lee, an undergraduate composer during the war. This research advances the understanding of music education during the war by analyzing and consolidating information on wartime university music education previously scattered among various sources. Also, this research will contribute to understanding the history of music education as part of the cultural history of Pusan.
