『교남교육회잡지』소재 개신유교 담론의 양상

A Study on Gyonam Education Association’s Theory of Eastern Body, Western Use

근대전환기 대한제국의 동향을 파악하기 위해서는 당대 주요 담론의 하나인 개신유교 담론의 양상을 점검하는 작업이 필요하다. 그 적절한 사례로 당시 주요 애국계몽 단체 중 하나인 교남교육회 기관지 『교남교육회잡지』 소재 개신유교 관련 기사를 집중 검토해보았다. 이는 크게 두 가지 양상을 보인다. 첫째 유학의 개량화, 둘째 유교의 종교화 등이 그것이다. 유학의 개량화 사례는 유학 중심의 개화 정책의 정당성을 확보하기 위해 체용론과 보편론적 관점에서 유학을 개량화한 것으로, 구학문과 신학문의 체용 관계를 그 논거로 삼은 것이다. 서구의 혁신성과 실용성을 동양 유교문명에서 찾음으로써 그 연관성을 확보한 것이 그러하다. 유교의 종교화 사례는 동양 중심의 윤리 통치의 당위성을 확보하기 위해 체용론과 보편론적 관점에서 유교를 종교화한 것으로, 정신과 물질의 상호 관계를 그 논거로 삼은 것이다. 동양의 도덕성을 서구 물질문명에서 찾음으로써 도덕 정신이 문명 발전의 근본이 되는 이유를 해명하고, 이를 바탕으로 하는 유교 체제를 정당화한 것이 그러하다. 애국계몽 담론의 하나로 개신유학이 부상한 바 있으나, 이것이 구체적으로 어떻게 활용되었는지 그 전개 양상을 확인하기는 쉽지 않다. 이러한 측면에서 『교남교육회잡지』 소재 기사는 주목할 만한 사례라 할 수 있다.

The enlightened intellectuals of Qing and Japan borrowed the traditional Confucian concept as a way to effectively embrace Western knowledge. It had an impact on the modernization of East Asia and the academia of the Korean Empire. A case that shows well the influence of the theory of ‘Eastern Body, Western Use’ is the Gyonam Education Association, a group that promotes national strength through enlightenment during the Korean Empire. The Gyonam Education Association executives use the concept of Confucianism in the process of persuading the ruling class, Confucian intellectuals, about the need for education on western studies. In other words, the aspect of the Gyonam Education Association’s theory of ‘Eastern Body, Western Use’ can be a clue to understanding the influence of the theory during the Korean Empire. The aspect of the Gyonam Education Association can be divided into three characteristics. First, it is western use and eastern body. Second, it is innovation and practicality. Third, it is morality and civilization. ‘Western use and eastern body’ establishes the body-use relationship between Confucianism and Western studies to make Confucianism as the basis in accepting Western studies. It can be found in the discourse on the subject of new and old studies. ‘Innovation and practicality’ proves that innovativeness, which is the essence of Western studies, is embedded in Confucianism to use Confucianism as a means of embracing Western studies. For instance, it presented ‘innovating the old to be new/restoration’ ‘adaptability/timeliness,’ ‘investigating to know surely/practicality’ as the basis of argument for the innovativeness, variability, and practicality of Confucianism. ‘Morality and civilization’ proved how the morality of Confucianism is related to the innovation of Western studies to make Confucianism the root of innovation. For example, it presented moral education as the secret in the development of Western civilization, elaborated on the body-use relationship between morality and technology, and explained how to realize moral ethics.
