뿌리깊은나무 박물관 소장 필사본 <심청전 단권> 연구

A Study on the Manuscript Version <Simcheong‐jeon Dan-kwon> Owned by the Suncheon City Deep Rooted Tree Museum

이 글은 애초 한창기선생 수집본으로서 지금은 순천 뿌리깊은나무 박물관에서 소장하고 있는 필사본 중 하나인 <심청전 단권>을 학계에 소개하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 텍스트를 검토한 후 우선 그 줄거리를 살펴 보았다. 그 결과 <심청전 단권>은 기존 <심청전>으로부터 최소한의 이야기 틀을 받아들이면서도 인물을 재설정하고 사건을 변개시키거나 새로이 삽입한, 개작본임을 알 수 있었다. 기존 <심청전> 서사와 비교할 때 나타난 가장 큰 차이점은 심청이 인당수에 몸을 던지는 이유가 선인들의 범죄행위 때문인 것으로 설정되어 그 희생효의 의미 비중이 약화되어 있다는 점과, 심청의 상대역을 새로이 등장시켜 그로 하여금 영웅적 활약을 펼친 후 심청과 다시 맺어지게 한다는 점이다. 이로 인해 <심청전 단권>은 단순히 효녀 이야기인 것만이 아니라 심청이 영웅과 결연하는 남녀의 이야기이기도 하게 되었다. 요컨대, <심청전 단권>은 판소리계 소설 <심청전>에다 새로이 심청의 상대역을 등장시켜 그의 영웅담을 첨가한 작품이다. 개작자는 독자로 하여금 두 유형 소설의 서사적 재미를 한 작품 속에서 함께 향유하게 하려 했던 것이다. 이러한 식의 개작을 통해 기존 <심청전>의 주제의식을 심화할 수는 없었다. 하지만 그 나름대로 <심청전>의 외연을 넓혀 놓았다는 점에서는 긍정적인 의의를 부여할 수 있으리라 생각한다.

The purpose of this study was to introduce to the academic circle <Simcheong‐jeon Dan-kwon(single‐volume)>, a manuscript version of <Simcheong‐jeon> originally collected by Han Chang‐gi and currently owned by the Suncheon City Deep Rooted Tree Museum. For this purpose, the text was reviewed and then the storyline was examined. According to the results, <Simcheong‐jeon Dan-kwon> adopts the basic story frame of the traditional <Simcheong‐jeon> but is an altered version with reset characters as well as modified or newly added. Compared to the narrative of the traditional <Simcheong‐jeon>, the biggest differences include. (a)Simcheong throwing herself into the Water of Indang as a result of the seamen’s criminal act, which, in turn, dilutes the meaning of Simcheong’s sacrificial filial piety, and (b)the introduction of a character playing a role opposite to Simcheong and his reconnection to Simcheong after rendering a heroic service. Observing these differences, <Simcheong‐jeon Dan-kwon> is not simply a story of a dutiful daughter but also a romance between Simcheong and a hero. Summatively, <Simcheong‐jeon Dan-kwon> was created by introducing an opposite character to Simcheong and adding his heroic tale to the traditional Pansori novel <Simcheong‐jeon>. The literary adaptor attempts to let the readers enjoy the narrative delight of two types of novel in a work. Although this type of alternation cannot deepen the theme consciousness of the traditional <Simcheong‐jeon>, it may have a positive meaning in that it expanded the denotation of <Simcheong‐jeon> in some way.
