Popularity of ShimChungJeon in the early 20th Century

이 연구에서는 20세기 초에 들어 <심청전>의 향유가 다양한 개작본으로, 매체 변용으로 다변화하는 양상에 주목하여 그 양상과 의미를 대중성의 관점에서 다루어보고자 하였다. 20세기 초는 새로운 문화의 유입으로 문학, 문화, 예술에 변화를 촉구하였다는 점에서 새로운 문학 향유의 양상은 이러한 요구에 대한 부응이라 할 수 있다. <심청전> 역시 이러한 문화적 격동기를 겪으면서 변화하는 양상을 보인다. 특히 <심청전>의 20세기적 향유는 매체적 다양성의 추구와 대중의 미적 감수성의 반영으로 볼 수 있다. 이에 이 글에서는 20세기 초 <심청전>의 다양한 모습을 정리하고, <심청전> 변화의 단서를 대중성에서 찾아보고자 하였다. 20세기 초 <심청전> 변용에 나타난 대중화 양상은 크게 네 가지로 나누어 보았다. 첫째는 <심청전> 향유의 대량화를 들었다. 둘째는 대중을 향한 작가 의식의 발현으로 이루어진 <심청전> 개작본들을 살펴보았다. 셋째는 대중적 오락 추구의 양상으로 만문만화와 만극 <모던 심청전>을 들었다. 마지막으로는 예술성과 대중성이 조화를 추구한 영화와 영화극 <심청전>을 들었다. 이러한 양상들에서 20세기 초의 양식 변용 <심청전>이 대중적 취향의 미감을 반영하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 개작자가 밝혀진 개작본들은 교훈적 의도가 강하여 통속성을 배제하면서 비극성을 강화하고 있었다. 이에 비해 만문만화와 만극 <모던 심청전>은 슬픔을 웃음으로 뒤집으며 해학성을 강화하고 있었다. 영화극과 영화는 슬픔을 극대화면서도 곳곳에 웃음의 요소를 배치하고 있었다. 이러한 고찰을 통해 <심청전>의 다변화는 예술성과 통속성, 모던한 것과 조선적인 것, 선정적인 것과 점잖은 것, 웃음과 눈물을 적절히 혼합하거나 어느 것 하나를 부각 시키고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

Based on the popularity of ShimChungJeon in the early 20th century, this study aims to discover the aspects and meanings of the different versions of ShimChungJeon. The early 20th century encouraged new literature, culture, and art, and this led the renewed interest in ShimChungJeon, which also evolved during this time. The popularity of ShimChungJeon in the 20th century reflects the interest of various media and aesthetic sensibility of the public. Therefore, this study examines the different aspects of ShimChungJeon, and regards its popularity as an indication of its evolution. Following are the different aspects of the evolved ShimChungJeon: 1) The features of ShimChungJeon which make it entertaining popularly. 2) It reflects the consciousness of the writer. 3) It aims to entertain the public. 4) It maintains a balance between artistic value and popularity. These aspects show that the evolved ShimChungJeon, in the early 20th century, reflected the aesthetic sensibility of the public. Some of the abridged versions have an instructive purpose; therefore, they reinforce the tragic aspects and are less popular. In comparison, the versions that seek to entertain the public reinforce the humorous aspect by blanketing sorrow with laughter. The Photodrama and movie versions balance the elements of sorrow and humor. This research showed that most of the versions of ShimChungJeon have artistic value and are popular; they are modern with traditional qualities; sensational but elegant; and humorous and emotional. While some versions focus on only one of these aspects.
