20세기 초 미주한인 소설에 나타난 판소리 관련서술에 대한 고찰

The popular folk songs and Pansori performance in a first generation Korean American’s full-length novels.

전낙청은 1875년에 평안북도 정주에서 태어나서 1904년 미국으로 이주한 1세대 미주 한인으로, 그가 쓴 장편소설 <홍경래전>과 <홍중래전>에는 판소리 관련 노래와 연행 장면이 서술되어 있다. 그의 소설에 묘사된 잔치장면에서는 여러 종류의 노래가 나오는데, 잔치 장면에서 불리는 노래는 ‘시조’, ‘단가’, ‘잡가’, ‘토가(민요)’ 등 다양하다. 이들 노래는 노래 제목만 제시되는 경우도 있으며 노랫말의 앞부분을 제목처럼 서술하는 경우도 있다. 노랫말을 서술한 대목도 적지 않은데, 주로 ‘토가’나 ‘잡가’에 해당하는 노래들이다. 또한 판소리 춘향가의 ‘사랑가’를 변용한 노래가 여러 번 나오고 있다. <홍중래전>에는 노래뿐만 아니라 <춘향가>, <심청가>, <흥부타령>, <별주부>을 연행하는 장면이 상세하게 서술되어 있다. 이들 판소리 연행 장면에서는 서북지역의 <배뱅이굿>이 함께 연행되기도 한다. 물론 전낙청 소설에 등장하는 각종 노래나 판소리 관련 장면 중에는 직접적인 체험이 아니라 전해 들었거나 잡지를 통해 알게 된 것도 있을 수 있다. 그러나 작자가 쓴 논설에서도 각종 노래가 언급되어 있고 판소리 연행에 대한 서술이 구체적인 것으로 보아 상당부분 작자의 실제 경험이 소설에 반영되어 있는 것으로 추정된다.

Chŏn Nak-ch’ŏng was a first generation Korean American who had been born in Chŏngju, P’yŏngan-bukto in 1875 and immigrated to America with his family in 1904. His two full-length novels, Hong Kyŏng-nae chŏn and Hong Chung-nae chŏn, describes many songs and scenes related to Pansori. At the feast described in his novel, the characters sing many kinds of songs, including Sijo(시조), Danga(단가), Jabga(잡가, a popular song) and Toga(토가, folk song). In the scene where Toga and Japga are sung, usually even the lyrics are described. In his novels, there are several “Sarangga”s the variation of Pansori Chunhyangga's inset song. Also there are many the Pansori performance scenes and Baebang-yi-gut performance scenes. Some of these songs and scenes may have been heard from ohters or read in magazines and newspapers. However, songs and Pansori performance are also mentioned in the author's essay and the scene of Pansori described in his novel are very specific. So I think his novel reflects his real experiences of Pansori and songs.
