<심청전> 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군의 내용과 특징

Introduction and Analysis of the Shim Panggyu Group in Shim Cheong Geon

근래 <심청전>의 이본을 분류하는 대목으로서 심청이 부친에게 수양녀를가기로 해 공양미를 얻었다고 하는 대목이 주목되어 왔다. 이에 따라 장자 계열, 장자 부인 계열, 장승상 부인 계열로 나뉘는 <심청전>의 이본 계열 가운데, 본고는 장자 부인 계열의 하위에 세 개의 이본군이 있음을 밝히고 그 가운데 첫 번째 이본군의 내용 구성을 밝히고자 한다. 이에 속하는 이본으로는 김광순 낙장 19장본, 박순호 43장본, 정문연 19장본, 조춘호 31장본, 최재남 낙장 22장본 5종이 있는데 이를 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군이라고 부르고자 한다. 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군은 그 삽화나 표현으로 보아 장자 부인 계열 이본군 가운데 장자 계열과 가장 친연성이 높은 이본군으로 보인다. 그러나 장자 계열과는 확실한 차별점을 부각시키고자 개작된 것으로 보이는데 첫째, 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군은 <심청전>의 초두를 대대적으로 확장시켜 독자의 흥미와 공감을 확대하였다. 둘째, 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군에는 심청이 탄생하고, 매신하여 인당수에 빠지고, 용궁에서 구원되고 황후가 되는 모든 과정, 즉 고난과 그에 대한 보상이 모두 하늘의 의지로 일어난 것임이 직접적으로 나타난다. 셋째, 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군은 장자 계열 <심청전>의 초두와 황성 가는 길의 양적 불균형을 해소하여 보다 정제된 모습을 갖춘다. 이러한 변모를 통해서 장자 부인 계열 심팽규 군은 심봉사의 부정적인 성격을 소거하고 긍정적인 형상을 새로이 구축하고, 심청은 열 아들보다 나은 딸로서 그 존재 의의를 증명하고자 하는 면모를 보인다.

A recent analysis identified three major versions within the narrative of Shimcheong-geon. These versions are distinguished by the following: 1) those with the rich man; 2) those with the rich man’s wife; and 3) those with the prime minister’s wife. Within the narrative with the rich man’s wife, there are three major sub-versions which I refer to as the “Shim Panggyu” Group, the “Shim Un” Group, and the “Shim Hakgyu” Group. This essay examines the variations in the “Shim Panggyu” Group and discusses how these variations relate to version of the narrative with the rich man. The “Shim Panggyu” Group is the closest sub-version of the story of the rich man’s wife to the major version of the narrative with the rich man. However, the two are distinguished from each other in several significant areas. Firstly, the “Shim Panggyu” Group discloses more captivating details in the narrative’s introduction compared to the version with the rich man. Secondly, the “Shim Panggyu” Group infuses the narrative with a more consistent focus on the transcendent world than the first major version. Thirdly, the “Shim Panggyu” Group is more refined and balanced than the version with the rich man, which has a brief introduction and gives superfluous details in the section on the way to the Imperial city. Through these comparative variations, the “Shim Panggyu” Group abandons the negative characteristics of Blind Shim in the rich man narrative and gives him a positive role as a father and husband. In the “Shim Panggyu” Group, the narrative also draws unique attention to Shimcheong’s worth as a daughter.
