<심청전>의 전승양상

An Aspect of Shimcheongjeon(심청전)'s Transmission

<심청전>은 우리 고전 소설 중에서 매우 사랑을 받았던 작품이다. 현재 학계에 보고된 필사본만도 100여 종에 달하여 여타 작품보다 훨씬 많다는 점이 이를 증명한다. 방각본과 활자본은 필사본과 더불어 <심청전>의 전승 과정에서 매우 중요한 비중을 차지하는데도 이를 본격적으로 다룬 논의는 많지 않다. 따라서 기존의 연구 성과를 참조하면서, ‘출판 문화의 측면’에서 <심청전>의 전승 양상을 고찰해 보는 것은 적지 않은 의미를 지니는 작업이라 할 수 있다. <심청전>의 방각본은 크게 경판 계열과 완판 계열로 나눌 수 있다. 경판 계열에는 문장체 소설적 특성이, 완판 계열에는 판소리적 특성이 두드러지게 나타난다. 그러나 두 가지 특성이 서로 배타적인 것은 아니어서 양쪽 계열에 모두 나타나기도 한다. 예를 들어 송동본에 판소리적 문체가 많이 사용되기도 하고, 경판본에 주로 나타나는 후일담이 완판본에 차용되기도 한다. 이러한 점은 당대 향유자들의 기호와 요구에 부응하고자 했던 출판업자들의 노력이 텍스트에 반영된 결과라고 추정된다. <심청전>의 활자본에서 주목되는 것은 <강상련>, <육전소설 심청전>, <몽금도전> 등이다. <강상련>은 계몽주의적 사고를 바탕으로 하여 우리 고전을 재인식하고자 했던 이인직이 시도한 일련의 개작 작업의 결과물이다. <강상련>은 <옥중화>와는 달리 과도한 개작이 그리 많지 않으며, 명창 심정순의 창본을 바탕으로 했기 때문에 판소리적 특성을 온전히 갖추고 있다. <육전소설 심청전>은 신문관에서 발간되었는데 최남선이 출판사의 주인이었으므로, 그가 주도했던 조선광문회의 서적 발간 사업과 육전소설 시리즈의 간행은 어느 정도 연관이 있어 보인다. 중요한 문헌이나 도서를 보존․전파하고자 했던 이 사업은 육전이라는 싼 값에 고전 작품을 널리 보급하고자 했던 육전소설의 발간 취지와 상통하기 때문이다. 특히 이해조의 개작 작업 등에 문제를 제기하면서 싸고 질 좋은 도서 발간을 추구했다는 점, <심청전>의 경우 경판을 대본으로 삼되 상업적 이윤 추구보다는 좋은 책 만들기에 주력했던 점 등을 통해 이 작품이 지닌 특성을 짐작해 볼 수 있다. <몽금도전>은 편집 겸 발행자인 노익형의 개작이 두드러진 작품이다. 이 작품은 심청의 환생, 심봉사의 개안 등 비현실적이라 판단되는 서사 단위를 모두 개작한 데다가 서술자의 목소리가 과도하게 개입되어 있어서 매우 특이한 모습을 보여준다. <심청전> 작품군 중 가장 많은 변모를 겪은 작품이라고 해도 될 <몽금도전>의 존재를 통해 활자본 텍스트의 전승과 변모 양상의 일단을 살펴볼 수 있다.

Shimcheongjeon is one of the representative work which had been loved in classical novel list. This work's manuscripts are almost 100 volumes and much more than other works. A bangkakbon(방각본) and hwaljabon(활자본) are very important at a process of transmission of Shimcheongjeon. But there are few paper about them. So, this paper bring to a focus at culture of publishing about Shimcheongjeon's transmission. Shimcheongjeon have 2 kinds of bangkakbon which are kyungpan(경판) and wanpan(완판). The text of kyungpan pedigree have a characteristic of written language novel. The text of wanpan pedigree have a characteristic of pansori. But two pedigree's characteristics are not exclusive. These elements are result of publisher's effort which publisher accommodates taste and needs to public. Shimcheongjeon have important 3 kinds of hwaljabon which are Kangsanryeon, Six coin novel Shimcheonjeon and Monggumdojeon. Kangsanryeon's adaptor is Lee Hae-jo. He has illuminism and has tried to adapt classical novels according to his ideology. Kangsanryeon is adapted version of Shimcheonjeon and it have many characteristics of pansori, because of its original text is Shim Jeon-soon's oral text. Six coin novel Shimcheongjeon is published at Shinmunkwan that belongs to Choi Nam-sun. He has publishing business and carried out a project that keep and popularize important books by publishing. So Six coin novel Shimcheongjeon is result of his project. Monggumdojeon has many characteristic of adaption that is made by publisher Roh Ik-hyung. Several descriptive units of this text are deleted by him, for example Shimcheong's rebirth, her father's gaining eyesight. Maybe he would have regarded this units as unreal. And there are many narrator's excessive intervention in this text. Therefore, this text would have failed to gain in public favor.
