판소리문학의 결말부에 담긴 현실인식 재론

A study on the Reality Embedded in the Endings­of Pansori Works: Focused on Simcheongjeon and Heungbujeon

<심청전>이나 <흥부전> 같은 판소리문학 작품에 대해서는 그 높은 문학적 성취를 인정하면서도 설화적 요소가 짙은 환상적 결말 때문에 그 예술적 가치가 감퇴되었다고 하는 논의가 주류를 이루어왔다. 이에 대해 이 논문에서는 작품에 대한 새로운 읽기를 통해 이들 작품의 결말부가 지니는 문학적 함의와 가치를 새롭게 규명하고자 하였다. 그 결과는, 이들 작품에서의 환상적 결말이 작품 전반부의 현실적 서사와 긴밀한 상호 조응관계를 이루고 있는 가운데 중요한 문학적 의미를 발휘하고 있다는 것이었다. 그것은 작품 이면에 가로놓여 있던 ‘하늘의 이치[天道]’를 극적으로 전면화한 형상으로서의 의의를 지니는바, 고난의 현실을 넘어선 좋은 날의 도래에 대한 사람들의 믿음과 의지를 함축하고 있다. 그러한 믿음과 의지는 작품의 또 다른 특성으로서의 낙관적인 웃음의 미학과 철학과 긴밀한 상호 연관을 맺고 있다. 믿음과 의지가 낙관적 웃음을 낳고 낙관적 웃음이 믿음과 의지를 뒷받침하는 관계다. 이러한 문학적 설정을 통해 사람들은 현실을 극복해 나갈 정신적 동력을 찾아왔던 터다. 이들 판소리문학의 결말부가 지니는 문학적 의의에 대한 적극적 재평가가 필요하다고 생각한다.

It is generally understood that Pansori works’ artistic value has been diminished due to their fantastic endings. However, I attempted to bring a new attention that such a fantastic ending has artistic meanings if we red those literary works in relation to symbolic representation. As a result, I have discovered that the fantastic endings in Pansori works demonstrated important realistic power intertwined with a confidence about 'the wise providence of Heaven'. People expected the improvement of their actual life and made sure to follow the path of virtue with that confidence. People added more power to such a attitude by 'the aesthetics of laugh' and 'the philosophy of optimism'. The optimistic viewpoint and positive confrontation to the troublesome situation endowed them the power to overcome their life’s obstacles. I think we need to change the viewpoint about fantastic ending of Pansori works to more positive mode.
