As she died young as a result of morphine addiction, little is known about Gim Chuweol, one of the representative pansori diva of mid- and late-1920s. Fortunately, however, no little can be detected about her performance, because of the many remaining recordings. Observing some excerpts from her recordings, Gim's singing style seems to be based upon the Eastern style [Dongpyeonje] of her teacher Song Mangap. While pursuing a career primarily in Seoul, however, she was much influenced from another maestro Yi Dongbaek. For example, the songtext of her Cheonja dwipuri is entirely different from that of Song's style. The simpler phrase-to-phrase textsetting, rather plain melodic contour, and expertness in the plain pyeongjo mode, among others, demonstrate the influences of Yi's Mid-old style [Junggoje] rather than the Eastern style proper.
