판소리 <심청가>의 형성에 대한 재론

A Rediscussion of the Formation of the Pansori “Simchenonga”

판소리의 발생이나 판소리 작품의 형성에 대한 논의는 최근 들어 학계의 관심 밖으로 밀려나게 되었다. 이렇게 된 데에는 다른 원인도 있었겠지만, 매번 논의를 거듭해도 해결이 나지 않는 문제라는 회의가 가장 큰 원인이 아니었을까 생각한다. 최근의 연구들은 비교적 풍부한 자료들을 제공하고 있는 19세기 판소리사에 집중되어 있다. 그러나 언젠가 판소리사 전체에 대한 이해에 도달하는 것이 우리의 목표라면, 초기 판소리사에 대한 탐구를 이대로 접어둘 수 없다. 해결점을 찾지 못한 기존의 다양한 논의들은 각각 일정한 한계를 내포하면서도 결국은 초기 판소리사에 대한 이해를 점차 심화시키며 더욱 진전된 논의로 나아갈 수 있는 발판을 마련해 준 것이 사실이다. 이제 기존의 논의들을 새로운 관점에서 통합하고 빈 곳을 메워가면서 18세기 혹은 그 이전 판소리사의 그림을 구체화하는 노력을 시도해야 할 때이다. 본고에서는 판소리 열두 마당의 형성과정에 대한 이해를 통해 판소리 <심청가>의 형성 문제를 보는 새로운 관점을 제시하고, 이 관점에서 기존의 연구 성과들을 통합하고자 한다. 다른 작품이 아닌 <심청가>를 대상으로 삼는 것은, <심청가>가 비교적 이른 시기에 형성된 작품들 중 하나라는 점, 그리고 그 형성에 대해 논란이 거듭되었으나 아직까지 해결점을 찾지 못했다는 점 때문이다. 본고에서는 특히 <심청가>가 소설 <심청전>으로부터 나왔는가, 아니면 애초에 판소리 광대에 의해 짜여졌는가 하는 문제가 중요하게 다루어질 것이다.

Later, as it was realized that this formula could not apply to every case, it was claimed that the pansori “Simchenonga” originated from the novel “Simcheongjeon.” This claim has gained academic recognition, yet its arguments are not well grounded and there are some facts to support the possibility that the novel “Simcheongjeon” originated from the pansori “Simchenonga.” In this paper, the main arguments of the claim that the pansori “Simchenonga” originated from the novel “Simcheongjeon” are critically examined, and the possibility that the novel “Simcheongjeon” originated from the pansori “Simchenonga” is rediscussed while considering the channel by which the origin story of Gwaneumsa was received and the influence of the shamanist narrative song “the abandoned princess” on the formation of “Simchenonga” and “Simcheongjeon.”
