「적벽가」의 핍진성에 대한 비판적 연구(1)

Critical Approach to the Versimilitude in Chokpyok-ga(1): Analysis of the aspects of versimilitude lack

판소리 다섯 바탕 중에서 「적벽가」의 서술 내용이 가장 높은 등급의 사실성(事實性) 및 사실성(史實性)을 내포하고 있다. 그것이 소설 『삼국지연의』와 연계되어 중국 한말의 정사(正史)를 상당 정도 반영하고 있다는 점에서 그렇다. 그런데 텍스트 내재적인 일관성 및 수용미학적인 핍진성에 있어서는 판소리 다섯 바탕 중에서 「적벽가」가 오히려 가장 많은 취약점을 드러낸다. 나머지 네 바탕의 서술체가 내용상의 일관성 아래 전반적으로 ‘그럴싸하게’ 수용되는 반면에, 「적벽가」에는 내용상으로 의아심을 자아내거나 적어도 형상화 과정에 장애를 유발하는 요소들이 무척 많다는 점에서 그렇다. 「적벽가」에 대한 기존 연구들은 「적벽가」의 위와 같은 취약점을 크게 보아 두 갈래로 해석하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 첫째는 그 같은 취약점이 판소리 전반에 걸치는 공통점--즉 판소리 서술체 고유의 유연성--이라는 것이고, 둘째는 그것이 ‘화용도 타령’을 모태로 「적벽가」가 형성되고 전승되는 과정에서 생긴 확장, 생략, 변형 등의 부산물이라는 것이다. 그런데 여기에는 「적벽가」 서술체상의 취약점이 아주 막연하게 포괄적으로 거론되고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 「적벽가」의 형성 및 전승 과정에 대한 다기한 주장들이 어차피 가설의 테두리를 벗어날 수 없다는 문제가 따른다. 이 같은 문제의식 아래, 「적벽가」의 형성 및 전승 과정에 대한 논의를 일단 배제하고, 현존 「적벽가」의 완창본을 독립적인 서술체로 간주하여 그 안의 핍진성 결여 양상들을 ‘구성’과 ‘인물’로 나누어 면밀하게 검토해 볼 필요가 있다. 사실 「적벽가」 서술체의 구성과 관련하여서는 과잉 함축, 시점 혼란, 시공 모호 등 핍진성 결여 양상이 드러나고, 특히 인물 관련 서술에서는 텍스트 내재적인 상충성은 물론 자기모순마저 수반한 핍진성 결여 양상들이 드러나기 때문이다. 한편 판소리 고유의 신명풀이 유희-예술성을 고려하더라도 거기에 일정 등급의 핍진성이 요청된다는 전제 아래, 궁극적으로 「적벽가」의 서술체 재정립의 필요성과 그 방향성에 대한 논의가 요청되기도 한다.

Verisimilitude(‘vraisemblance’ in French), as an appearance of truth, refers to a neoclassic idea of reality or credibility on the reader's sense and within the context of the fictional world. It denotes also, in all arts, literature and theatre, in particular, the extent to which a work of fiction exhibits some realism, or otherwise conforms to our sense of realistic credibility or prbability. What will be so its function, status and narrative aspects in Chokpyok-ga(or Song of Red Cliff), one of the five principal works of pansori? It is indeniable that like all other fictive genders, pansori also depends on certain linguistic textual narrative form. But as the narration in pansori being actualized by vocal, musical and mimetic reprsentation before some audience, the narrative versimilitude in pansori is far more flexible than in others and tends to even yield to diverse aesthetic aspects of playing artistry. The purpose of this paper is so to examine the correlations between narrative verisimilitude and playing artistry in Chokpyok-ga. This, by adopting ‘versimilitude’ as a main operative concept for approach to textual effects in general, and concentrating upon the aspects of lack of versimilitude along the current of narrativo-description in Chokpyok-ga. We hope that the results of this synchronic approach would contribute to clarifying those of the diachronic approaches.
