다블뤼 주교의 저술에 나타난 1860년 무렵 판소리의 모습

본 논문의 목적은 지금까지 학계에 알려지지 않았던 판소리사 관련 자료를소개하고, 이 자료를 통해 확인되는 몇 가지 의미 있는 사실들을 짚어 보는데 있다. 소개할 자료는 프랑스인 선교사제로서 1845년 조선에 입국해 1866년 새남터에서 순교할 때까지 약 21년간 조선에서 활동했던 다블뤼(Daveluy,1818-1866) 주교의 기록이다. 이 기록은 다블뤼 주교의 저술들 중 하나인Notes pour l'introduction à l'histoire de Corée(조선사 입문 노트)에서 발견된다. 불어로 작성된 이 저술에 조선의 과거제도(科擧制度)에 대해 서술한부분과 조선의 민간 연희(演戱)에 대해 서술한 부분이 있는데, 여기에 각각판소리에 관한 기록이 포함되어 있다. Notes pour l'introduction à l'histoire de Corée가 집필된 시기는 1860년 전후로 추정된다. 저자가 15년이나 되는오랜 기간 동안 조선에서 살며 많은 견문과 독서를 통해 풍부한 지식을쌓은 뒤에 이 글을 썼으므로 그 내용이 상당히 자세하며 오류가 많지 않음을짐작할 수 있다. 판소리에 관한 다블뤼 주교의 기록은, 판소리의 외적인 모습을 기술하는데 그치지 않고, 판소리 창작 또는 재창작 과정, 그리고 판소리 연행 및향유의 다양한 모습을 보여 주는 데까지 나아가고 있다. 이 기록은 한편으로 우리가 지금까지 추정해 왔던 19세기 후반 판소리의 모습을 재확인시켜주기도 하지만, 다른 한편으로는 우리의 추정과 배치되는 모습을 보여 주기도 하며, 우리가 미처 생각하지 못했던 판소리의 모습을 보여 주기도 한다. 그러므로 이 기록의 진지한 검토가 19세기 후반 판소리에 관한 논의들을 더욱 진전시키는 데 도움이 되리라 생각한다. 본 논문에서 검토한 바를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다블뤼 주교의기록은 19세기 후반에 판소리가 오락성 또는 광대놀음의 성격을 확고히유지하고 있었음을 보여 준다. 둘째, 다블뤼 주교의 기록은 판소리광대들이 판소리 사설을 짓는 능력을 가지고 있었으며, 그들이 책에서 소재를 구해 판소리 사설을 짓기도 했음을 보여 준다. 셋째, 다블뤼 주교의 기록은중간층 또는 상층 부녀자들이 판소리를 향유했으며, 그들이 판소리 공연을감상할 때는 판소리광대들이 욕설이나 육담을 삭제했음을 보여 준다.

The Purpose of this paper is to introduce a new material, which documents the picture of pansori in the 19th century, and to review several facts of pansori history which can be proved by this material. This material is found in Notes pour l'introduction à l'histoire de Corée written by Marie Nicolas Antoine Daveluy(1818-1866), a French missionary priest who entered Chosŏn Dynasty in 1845 and worked for 21 years until he died a martyr in 1866. It is estimated that Notes pour l'introduction à l'histoire de Corée was written around 1860, when the author had experienced and studied the culture of Chosŏn for about 15 years. Thus, it is believed that it gives quite accurate information and has few mistakes. Daveluy had a great interest in pansori and also a deep affection for it. Therefore, he did not only try to describe the appearance of pansori, but also tried to report the way how it was produced and how it was enjoyed. His writing verifies the picture of pansori which has been developed by many researchers on a weak foundation so far, but on the other hand, it also presents a new picture of pansori which does not coincide with the picture we have had in mind. It tells us that pansori held its entertainment value,while it tried to obtain artistic value in the late 19th century. More interestingly, it also tells us that pansori clowns as creative singing poets arranged pansori texts for themselves, and that they performed a specially edited version for the female audience.
