『매일신보』에 연재된 震庵 李輔相의 한문현토체 판소리계 소설 창작 배경과 목적

The Purpose of the Pansori Novels in Punctuated Chinese Characters by Jinam Lee Bosang through Publishing in <Maeil Shinbo>

이보상은 활자본 고소설이 독서 시장 판매의 최상위에 놓여 있던 때에 매일신보의 지면을 빌려 15편의 한문현토체 소설을 연재한다. 그는 장장 12년 동안3100여 회에 달하는 소설을 연재했다. 15편의 소설 중에는 판소리계 소설이3편이 포함되어 있다. 이 세 편의 판소리계 소설은 <심청전>, <토끼전>, <흥부전>이다. 작자는 이 세 편의 판소리계 소설을 연재하면서 기존의 작품을 그대로옮기는 것에 그치지 않고, 자신이 평소에 지니고 있었던 판소리에 대한 의견을작품에 투영시키고 있다. 본고에서는 이보상의 판소리계 소설을 소개하고 개작의식을 살펴보는 것에 초점을 맞추어 진행하려고 한다. 이보상은 역사적 사실을 첨가하기 위해 한문으로 서술할 수밖에 없다고 강조하고 있다. 이보상은 한문으로 서술된 “독서물”을 통해 유교적 질서에 대한중요성을 설파하려는 목적을 가지고 있었다. 그렇기 때문에 국문으로 존재하던소설들을 다시 漢文으로 재창작하고, 민담과 야담으로 존재하던 이야기를 엮어새로운 소설로 만들어 냈다. 漢文으로 작성된 소설은 필연적으로 향유층이 제한될 수밖에 없다. 그러나 국문으로 서술된 작품들을 통해서는 본래의 의미를깨달을 수 없다고 판단했기 때문에 이보상은 한역으로 소설을 재창작한 것이다

Jinam Lee Bosang serially published 15 novels which were in punctuatedChinese characters for Korean readers through <Maeil Shinbo>, when printedancient novels were topping the sales of reading market. For a period of 12good years, his publishing of novels reached an amount of about 3100 times. In the 15 novels were 3 novels which were from Pansori epic chants. <Storyof Shimcheong>, <Story of Rabbit>, and <Story of Heungbu> were the three. In the publishing of the three Pansori novels, the writer not only just carriedthem as they had been, but he also reflected his long kept opinion about Pansoriinto them. The reason he published the Pansori novels in the early period was that eachwork contained traditional values like “filial duty”, “faith between friends”, and“loyalty towards country”, and also that he had dissatisfaction about “歌於俳優之口(Songs are in the mouths of actors.)” His concern like this was because ofan ordinary fact that many reference data had been lost in the process of conveyancethrough mouths. Therefore Lee Bosang moved the knowledge he had onto theface of documents. It was not to just display his superiority of knowledge, itwas because of his belief that the new data he wrote with his knowledge mighthelp future generations.
