Chosŏn Period Sŏnbi’s (Traditional Korean Learned Person’s) Understanding of China, Ryukyu & Japan: A Study of Ch’ŏnhajido, The Atlas of World Maps (2)

In the beginning part of Ch’ŏnhajido (Korean Atlas of World Maps) there are three maps of foreign countries. They are maps of China, Ryukyu and Japan which reflect the Sŏnbi or Korean learned persons’ attitudes toward those countries. The descriptive phrases written on the margins of those maps suggest that Koreans regarded China as the source of cultural influence on them, while Ryukyu and Japan as the countries on the same level as Korea.
