학습자의 비판적 문해력 향상을 위한 고전의 현대적 수용 연구: 셰익스피어의 <오셀로>와 현대의 <데스데모나>

A Study on the Modern Adaptation of Classics to Improve Learners’ Critical Literacy: Shakespeare’s <Othello> and Modern <Desdemona>s

목적 본 연구는 학습자의 비판적 문해력 향상을 위해 고전문학 작품의 현대적 전환의 양상을 연구하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 영문학 고전 작품인 셰익스피어의 <오셀로>를 읽은 후, <오셀로>를 대상으로 여성 작가에 의해 현대적 시각에서 재생산된 <데스데모나> 두 편을 선정하여 고전과 현대의 여성에 대한 시각과 관점의 차이를 검토함으로써 가부장적 주제에 희생되었 던 여성 인물에 대한 현재적 시각을 연구하였다. 결과 현대의 관점으로 다시 쓰인 두 작품, 폴라 보겔의 <데스데모나: 손수건에 관한 연극>과 토니 모리슨의 <데스데모나>는 현대의 여성을 둘러싼 사회 문화적, 인종적 갈등을 고전의 플롯을 인용하고 변형하는 것으로 재현하였고 이러한 변형과 재현은 고전의 변치 않는 가치와 더불어 현대 사회를 읽어낸 문학작품으로서의 의의를 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 결론 본 연구는 영상매체에 익숙한 현대의 학습자에게 고전과 현대의 연계를 이해하고 논리적으로 접근할 수 있는 토대를 제공하여 그들의 비판적 문해력 향상에 기여할 수 있는 교육콘텐츠이다.

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the modern adaptations of classics, Shakespeare, in order to use as liberal art education content to improve reader/learners' critical literacy. Methods Together with Shakespeare’s Othello, Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief by Paula Vogel and Desdemona by Toni Morrison, two modern adaptations of Othello, are analyzed, focusing on gender and racial issue with which Shakespeare’s Othello dismissed to deal in the patriarchal discourse. Results Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief represents social conflicts on genders, and Desdemona shows cultural and racial conflicts not only between black/slave and white/master but also between black/husband and white/wife through reconstructing original plot through female character’s point of view. This study confirms that the understanding modern perspective revealed in rewriting classics has various educational significance. Conclusions This study is an educational content that can improve the critical literacy of readers/learners who are familiar with video media, and can provide a foundation for logically approaching and critically understanding the connection between the classics and modern times.
