A Comparative Analysis of Pi and the Area of a Circle in Mathematics Textbooks of Korea, Japan, Singapore and The US

본 연구는 한국과 일본, 싱가포르, 미국 수학 교과서에서 원주율의 속성과 원의 넓이 측정의 기본 개념들이 어떻게 다루어지고 있는지를 비교․분석하였다. 이를 위해 원주율 개념과 원의 넓이 측정 개념에 대한 이론적 논의를 분석하여 분석틀을 설정하였으며, 이에 따라 각국 교과서를 분석하였다. 분석 결과로부터 도출한 교수학적 시사점은 다음과 같다. 원주율의 비율 속성의 개념적 이해를 도울 수 있도록 원주율 정의 재고하기, 도입하는 측정 활동을 측도 속성이 부각되도록 재구성하기, 모든 원에서 일정하다는 상수 속성 부각시키기, ‘원주÷지름=원주율’의 몫 속성 의도적으로 유예하기, 무한 속성에 따른 근삿값을 상황에 따라 적절하게 선택할 수 있는 활동 제공하기 등을 제안하였다. 또한 원의 넓이 측정차원에서 좀 더 정밀한 원의 넓이 탐구하기, 원의 재배열 도형 구성을 위한 전략 탐구하기, 실무한을 토대로 재배열 도형 표현하기 등을 제안하였다.

In this study, we analyzed the contents of pi and the area of a circle presented in Korean, Japanese, Singapore, and American elementary mathematics textbooks, and drew implications for the teaching of pi and the area of a circle in school mathematics. We developed a textbook analysis framework by theoretical discussions on the concept of the pi based on the various properties of pi and the area of a circle based on the central ideas of measurement and the previous researches on pi and the area of a circle in elementary mathematics. We drew five suggestions for improving the teaching of pi and three suggestions for improving the teaching of the area of a circle in Korean elementary schools.
