Examining Characteristics of Outstanding Picture books about People with Disabilities: Focusing on I talk like a river

목적 이 논문은 기존에 제시된 우수 장애 그림책의 특징을 재검토하여 보완해야할 사항들을 제안하는 것에 연구의 목적을 두었다. 방법 연구의 대상으로 다수의 아동문학상을 수상한 ≪나는 강물처럼 말해요≫를 선정하였다. 이 책의 분석을 위해 장애 관련 우수 어린이 도서의 특징을 연구한 선행 연구들을 참고하여 분석 코드를 도출하였다. 분석 후에는 선행연구들이 제시한 특성에서 보안되어야 할 부분은 무엇인지 살펴보았다. 결과 연구 분석 결과 ≪나는 강물처럼 말해요≫는 선행 연구들이 제시한 바와 같이 장애를 가진 소년이 주인공으로, 1인칭 시점에서 장애인으로서 자신이 겪는 일상에서의 경험을 구체적으로 묘사하였고, 눈에 보이지 않는 장애유형도 그림책에서 효과적으로 소개될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 또한 이 책은 독자의 공감을 일으키는 글과 그림으로 표현되었음을 알 수 있었다. 하지만 선행 연구들의 결과와는 다르게 ≪나는 강물처럼 말해요≫는 비장애인의 장애인에 대한 인식의 변화를 보여주지 않았다. 또, 비장애인의 인식이나 태도의 변화와 상관없이 장애인이 자신의 장애에 대한 인식의 변화를 보여주었다. 결론 본 연구는 비장애인이 장애인을 우리의 개념으로 수용하는 모습이 부재하더라도 우수 장애 관련도서가 될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 이 외에 본 연구에서 찾은 특성은 기존의 선행연구가 제시한 우수 장애관련 도서 특성에 추가되어 도서 선택 시 고려될 수 있을 것이다.

Objectives The purpose of the study is to re-examine the selection criteria for outstanding picture books about people with disabilities, which were suggested by the previous studies, and make suggestions for a revision. Methods The multiple award-winning picture book, I talk like a river was selected for the study and was analyzed. To analyze this picture book, the researchers made codes based on previous studies that examined characteristics of outstanding books about people with disabilities. After the analysis, the researchers discussed what could be added to the previous studies’ findings. Results This study found that, as suggested in the previous studies, In I talk like a river, the main character, who is a boy with a disability, described his daily life from his point of view. His story was described with text and illustrations, which drew readers’ empathy for the main character. However, unlike the previous studies’ findings, I talk like a river did not show how people without disabilities change their perspectives on people with disabilities. In addition, it showed a person with a disability changed his perception of his disability regardless of other people who do not have disabilities changed their perceptions or attitudes towards people with disabilities. Conclusions This study shows that even though a book does not show people without disabilities accept people with disabilities as one of them, it can be considered an outstanding book about people with disabilities. Such a characteristic we found in this study could be added to the characteristics of outstanding picture books about people with disabilities and considered when selecting books.
