Though the varieties of English have been widely acknowledged in the field of sociolinguistics, the concept of English varieties has not been integrated into college English classrooms. The aim of the present study, therefore, is to explore how English varieties-based instruction in a Linguistics course impacts on college students’ awareness of and attitudes toward the varieties of English and English as a lingua franca (ELF). In addition to the questionnaire which most previous studies focus on, the current study aims to capture English learners’ voices through semi-structured interview as well. Throughout the 2023 spring semester, the instructor offered English varieties-based lecture with a focus on ELF- and World English-related theories, online contents, and lessons on the varieties of English. A total of 18 college students majoring in English language and literature participated in the study. Two questionnaires were distributed to the students, an interview was organized, and it was required for the students to submit journals every week after class. The collected data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. It turned out that a majority of students came to recognize the varieties of English, while they are still deeply attached to native English norms due to realistic problems.
