The current study aims at comparing EFL learners’ perceptions of foreign language anxiety between in-person and online classes in order to speculate on the relationship of two teaching modes (emergency remote teaching classes and in-person classes) and the foreign language classroom anxiety (FLCA) the participants of the study experienced. For this study, 345 college students were asked to respond to questionnaires from FLCAS with some open-ended interview items. The results indicate that the learners’ overall and item-level FLCA is lower in emergency remote teaching (online) classes than in-person classes; and that the sources of anxiety in both classes were impromptureplies, response to unexpected questions, and peers’ gazing upon them in classes. In addition, they most frequently reported a lack of real-time communication in online classes and technology-related problems in in-person classes as the most anxiety-provoking sources. Discussion on the results and suggestions are followed.
