Meaning of Work and Working Experience among Unwed-mothers

이 연구의 목적은 미혼모들이 자신의 노동을 어떻게 인식하고 의미화하는지 분석하는 것이다. 연구를 위해 9명의 미혼모들을 대상으로 직업훈련과 구직활동, 직장생활을 포함한 노동경험에 대하여 심층면접을 진행하고 질적 사례연구를 하였다. 미혼모들은 직장생활을 하는동안 미혼임신과 출산에 대한 비난, 성희롱, 공식적인 업무 불이익, 아이아버지에 대한 질문등 차별적 상황에 놓인다. 또한 출산 후 미혼모의 노동은 자립으로 이해되어 미혼모들이 원하지 않더라도 직업훈련을 이수해야만 한다. 이러한 상황은 미혼모들로 하여금 노동지속을 어렵게 하는 요소로 작용한다. 한편 미혼모는 원가족과의 관계 단절, 경제적 취약성으로 인해자녀돌봄의 부담이 다른 기혼여성들에 비해 더 크기 때문에 취업을 포기하기도 한다. 이와 더불어 미혼모의 모성을 비정상적으로 여기고 전적인 자녀돌봄을 하라는 주변의 압력으로 노동을 포기하기도 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 미혼모들은 강한 노동의지를 보이는데, 이는 노동이미혼모, 엄마라는 역할을 벗어나 다른 사회구성원들과 자녀에게 온전히 자신으로 인정받을수 있는 수단으로 여겨지기 때문이다. 또한 미혼모들은 현재의 불안정 노동을 벗어나기 위해자격증 취득과 경력쌓기를 계속하며 언젠가는 안정된 노동에 정착할 수 있다는 미래적 관점을 견지한다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze how single mothers perceive and meaning their work. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine single mothers about their labor experiences, including vocational training, job search, and work life, and qualitative case study analysis was conducted. During their working lives, single mothers face discriminatory situations such as criticism of unmarried pregnancy and childbirth, sexual harassment, formal work disadvantages, and questions about the father of the child. Furthermore, after childbirth, single mothers' labor is understood as self-reliance, and they are forced to complete vocational training even if they do not want to. This situation makes it difficult for single mothers to continue working. On the other hand, single mothers may choose not to work because the burden of caring for their children is greater than that of other married women due to the severance of ties with their original families and economic vulnerability. In addition, single mothers may give up working because of the pressure from the community to view their motherhood as abnormal and to take full care of their children. Nevertheless, single mothers are strongly motivated to work because they see it as a way to break out of their roles as single mothers and mothers and to be fully recognized as themselves by other members of society and their children. In addition, single mothers continue to acquire qualifications and build their careers in order to escape their current precarious work and maintain a future perspective that they can one day settle into stable work.
