The 70th Anniversary of the Korean War's Armistice and the Historical Implications of the Modern and Contemporary History of Uijeongbu City
(Purpose) Currently, the Korean Peninsula is a very complex geopolitical location and the international political issues that arise from it are so complex that the South Peace in the North will not come easily. This is because the geopolitical situation in the region has become a battleground for the interests of major powers. In addition, the level of North Korea's nuclear threat continues to rise, and the ceasefire, which is not a complete end to the war, is always a source of anxiety for us. Especially with the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, concerns about world peace and security are deepening, so we would like to inspire pride and attachment to the Uijeongbu area by reflecting on the history of the Korean War, which marked the 70th anniversary of the armistice, and the historical significance of Uijeongbu City, a representative U.S. military base, and exploring the future direction. (Design/methodology/approach) I would like to examine the background and meaning of the Korean War and consider what it means as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice this year. In particular, in order to explore Uijeongbu, a military city closely related to the Korean War, I would like to look at Uijeongbu before the Korean War and Uijeongbu that has changed after the Korean War, which are recorded in the history of the Korean War. Taking this historical background as a lesson, I looked back on the presentness of Uijeongbu City's efforts toward the future. (Findings) After the Korean War, the area of Uijeongbu has not yet been developed, even though all USFK bases stationed there for the purpose of defending the capital of Seoul have been moved to Pyeongtaek. It is a place where public awareness remains. In the past, Uijeongbu was located in the northeast of Seoul, between Dobongsan Mountain and Suraksan Mountain, so unlike Yangju, which was a large town, it was just a small town with few people coming and going. Then, when the Korean War broke out, Uijeongbu, which was a transportation hub, served as a major supply base for the US Army's 1st Corps, taking charge of battles on the western front and supplying military supplies. (Research implications or Originality) We were able to get a glimpse of the current state of local governments contemplating how to develop the US military base area in Uijeongbu, which has now all moved to Pyeongtaek and remains empty. After the Armistice Agreement is over, it is necessary to reflect on what kind of efforts the Korean Peninsula should make to pave the way for eternal peace through negotiations for the end of the war. In addition, we must realize that the freedom we enjoy now is not given for granted, and we must not stop striving for world peace, not just peace in one country.
