PBL-Based Grammar Class Case Study: Targeting Advanced Korean Language Learners

목적: 본 연구는 PBL(Problem-Based Learning, 문제중심학습)을 적용한 문법 수업 사례를 통해 한국어 최상급 수준의 학습자들을 위한 문법 교육의 방안과 그 시사점을 알아보는 데 목적이 있다. 방법: 본 연구는 서울 소재 대학 한국어교육 기관의 최상급과정 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 PBL을 적용한 한국어 문법 수업을 실시하였다. 그리고 설문조사와 인터뷰를 통해 본 문법 수업에 대한 인식과 학습자 만족도를 조사하였다. 결과: 그 결과, 학습자들은 본 수업 방식이 기존에 학습한 문법 항목에 대한 지식을 재발견하고 재구조화하는 데 도움이 되었다고 인식했으며 이러한 문법 수업 방식이 최상급 수준의 학습자에게 적합하다고 생각하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 발표를 다소 부담스럽게 생각했고 평가 단계에서 교사(문제에 대한 권위자)가 개입하여 문법에 대한 지식을 정리해 주기를 원하는 것으로 나타났다. 결론: 본 연구의 PBL 기반 수업-모형이 최상급 수준의 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 하는 문법 수업의 한 방안이 될 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 수업 사례는 향후 최상급 한국어 학습자를 위한 문법 수업에 변형 또는 응용되어 사용될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

Purpose: This study aims to examine the approach and implications of problem-based learning (PBL) for grammar education for advanced Korean language learners based on actual grammar classes. Method: A Korean language grammar class using PBL was designed and conducted for advanced Korean language learners at a Korean language education institution in Seoul during the summer semester of 2022 and the spring semester of 2023. Subsequently, surveys and interviews were conducted with the students to gauge their satisfaction with the class. Results: The students found the class helpful in re-exploring and restructuring their knowledge of the grammar topics they had learned, and they believed that the PBL teaching method was suitable for advanced learners. However, they felt somewhat overwhelmed by the presentations they had to make and expressed a desire for the teacher (as an authority figure on the problems) to intervene and provide guidance on organizing their knowledge of grammar during the evaluation phase. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the PBL-based teaching model is a viable solution for teaching grammar to advanced Korean language learners. It is expected that the grammar class designed and used in this study will be adopted or applied in other advanced-level grammar classes for Korean language learners in the future.
