목적: 본 연구는 외국인 유학생에 관한 신문 보도를 텍스트 마이닝 기법을 활용하여 분석하고 국내 외국인 유학생 현주소를 고찰해 보고자 한다. 방법: 분석 기간은 외국인 유학생 수가 늘기 시작한 2000년부터 팬데믹 전인 2019년까지이며 분석 방법은 언론 분석 사이트인 빅카인즈를 활용하고 외국인 유학생 기사를 가장 많이 다루고 있는 조선일보 기사를 R 프로그램의 텍스트 마이닝 기법을 통해 분석한다. 결과: 언론 분석을 통해서 2000년대에는 국제화 시대에 맞춰 외국인 유학생을 유치하고, 모집하는 것에 집중되어 있었고 2010년대에는 외국인 유학생 양적 유치로 인한 문제점을 지적하고 있는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 결론: 신문 보도는 현실을 반영하고 있다. 외국인 유학생 언론 보도를 통해 외국인 유학생 현주소를 확인할 수 있었다. 향후 외국인 유학생들을 위한 정책으로 양적인 성장은 물론 질적으로도 나아갈 수 있는 현실적인 방안이 필요하다.
Purpose: This study aims to analyze newspaper reports on foreign students using text mining techniques and examine the current status of foreign students in Korea. Method: The analysis period covers 2000 to 2019, encompassing the time when the number of foreign students began to increase until before the pandemic. Results: Through media analysis, it was found that during the 2000s, the focus was on attracting and recruiting foreign students in line with the era of globalization. However, in the 2010s, problems caused by the quantitative attraction of foreign students were pointed out. Conclusion: The newspaper reports accurately reflect the reality of foreign students in Korea. Through media coverage, we were able to understand the current situation of foreign students. For future policies concerning foreign students, realistic measures are needed to advance not only quantitatively but also qualitatively.
