통일교육은 자유민주주의에 대한 신념과 민족공동체의식 및 건전한 안보관을 바탕으로통일을 이룩하는 데 필요한 가치관과 태도를 기르도록 하기 위한 교육을 의미한다. 현재서울 등 수도권의 경우에는 체험학습 기회나 다양한 인프라를 활용하여 통일교육에 대하여 확대하고자 하는데 지방의 경우에는 인구 비율이 상대적으로 적기도 하고 통일교육과관련한 인프라 구축이 적기 때문에 상대적으로 통일교육이 약한 상황이다.. 통일교육사례에 대하여 살펴보고 이러한 점을 개선하기 위해서 지역밀착형 체험학습 확대, 통일교육을가르치는 교수, 강사, 선생님 등 교원에 대한 지속적인 교육 확대, 지방자치단체를 활용하여 지역에서 통일교육이 뿌리내릴 수 있도록 통일교육은 장려되는 것이 필요하다.
