Cosmology provides a whole context which explains where we come from, who we are and where we are going. Human beings have found meaning and purpose of their life in cosmology. Thomas Berry points out that current cosmology stays on the partial side and fails to offer us a meaningful context for our lives. He also argues that the absence of an appropriate cosmology has become causes of the ecological crisis. Therefore, Berry proposes an integral cosmology that considers the ultimate and essential aspects of the universe, rather than a scientific cosmology which merely focuses on the physical aspects of the universe. Berry’s cosmological insight was influenced by Teilhard de Chardin, who took an integrated approach of science and theology to the cosmogenesis. Following Teilhard’s perspective, Berry sees the universe as a reality that is constantly created and developed in history, not a fixed and completed place. Furthermore, he insists that the universe has had both physical-material and psychic-spiritual dimensions from its very beginning and has evolved toward increasing complexity and unity. Based on this prospect, Berry proposes a new cosmology that combines scientific and religious cosmology in the form of a historical story. In the universe story that reveals Berry’s integral cosmology, science story, historical story, and religious story are deeply integrated. Through this comprehensive story, Berry hopes that we rediscover wonders of the world shining with the divine presence and come closer to the sacred mystery permeating this world. In addition, he leads to a new understanding of human identity by looking at where human beings belong from a macroscopic point of view. To sum up, Berry presents a cosmology that encompasses ethical and religious dimensions based on scientific study; the integral cosmology contributes to restoring the intimate relationship between humanity and the earth community and to reflect on human’s role in this world.
