The purpose of this study is to classify various patent producer groups in the field of marine science and technology and derive implications through analysis of distribution characteristics. This study primarily examines descriptive statistics and trends. Drawing on the Marine Science and Technology Classification from the Korean Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (revised on September 9th, 2017), we classified patents in marine sciences into 13 categories examined the types of patent applicants’ affiliations. A total of 69,217 patents were used for analysis in this study. Following is a brief overview of the empirical findings of this study. First, the Republic of Korea (ROK) has the largest number of patents in the field of marine science and technology, and the vast majority (94,1%) of these patents were submitted to the Korean Intellectual Property Office. Second, among the five types of patent applicants, universities and research institutions accounted for a bigger share in the ROK (26.1%) than in other countries. Thirdly, the percentage of patents granted to universities and research institutions has increased consistently over time. In conclusion, we provided a more detailed interpretation of the implications of the findings and discussed the future direction of the marine science and technology.
