The replacement of fossil fuels is urgently needed for carbon neutrality and sustainable development. Hydrogen is represented as a next-generation energy source, and among the various methods to obtain hydrogen, water electrolysis using catalysts has been studied steadily. Among them, photoelectrochemical water electrolysis using solar energy is a promising method, but it has problems such as high overvoltage, durability of photoelectrodes under aqueous electrolyte environment, and photocorrosion. Therefore, recently, there has been increasing interest in hybrid water electrolysis, which improves efficiency by reducing the high overvoltage of water electrolysis by adding sacrificial materials. In this article, we review various photoelectrochemical hybrid water electrolysis studies and their limitations.
