This study aims to explore the transformative power of patience and hope, as imparted by the Crane Man in A Single Shard on the character of Tree-ear. This study will delve into their lives through the lens of Victor Frankle’s ‘Logotherapy’ theory, which asserts that humans can thrive when they pursue meaning, and that such meaning can be created by fulfilling their responsibilities. Despite his physical limitations, the Crane-man imparts noble principles and guidance to Tree-ear, encouraging him to set lofty goals and strive to achieve them. He emphasizes honesty, resilience, and the courage to face adversity to Tree-ear. Although the Crane-man does not live to see Tree-ear’s success as a potter, he fulfills his life’s purpose by nurturing Tree-ear with unwavering devotion. Under the Crane Man’s loving care, Tree-ear eventually becomes an accomplished potter, creating exquisite celadon pottery that is akin to heavenly works of art.
