Xavier Dolan, a young director known for his distinctive personal style, has consistently explored the fusion of artistic expression and personal experience in his creations, establishing himself as a prominent figure in Quebec, Canada's auteur film scene. Throughout his body of work, the theme of the mother-child relationship is a recurring and central motif. This essay aims to analyze the portrayal of maternal roles in two of his films ‘I killed my mother’ (2009) and ‘Mommy’ (2014). By comparing these works and delving into the aesthetics of his filmmaking style, we will explore the evolution of Xavier Dolan’s film style concerning the mother figure. This analysis will encompass artistic expression, compositional changes, musical connotations, and ultimately convey the artistry of his films from a personal perspective.
