학현 변형윤, 한국 사회생태 경제학의 선구자

Hakhyun Byun, Hyung Yoon, Pioneer of Social ecological Economics in Korea

학현 변형윤이 분배적 정의와 경제민주화 가치를 중심에 두면서 인간을 위한 경제를 지향한 것은 잘 알려져 있다. 하지만 그의 경제학이 환경과 공존하는 가운데 인간중심경제와 대중의 삶의 질 향상을 추구했다는 것, 그런 의미에서 사회생태 경제학의 면모를 가지고 있다는 점은 덜 주목되었다. 이 연구는 학현 경제학이 한국에서 사회생태 경제학의 선구라고 볼 내용을 남겨 주었음을 보인다. 학현의 유산을 한마디로 말하면 불평등과 부정의를 타파하고 환경과 공존하는 지속가능한 발전을 통해 대중소비사회와는 결이 다른 사회생태적 대안경제의 길로 가자는 것이다. 이 제안이 중요한 것은 다방면의 불평등, 부정의, 불균형의 타파와 생태적 전환이 통합적으로 추구되어야 함을 일러주기 때문이며 이는 여전히 현재성을 갖는다. 전례없는 기후생태위기에 직면하고 사회적 불평등과 불로소득주의가 극심해 포스트성장 또는 탈성장대안이 출현한 오늘날에는 학현 사회생태 경제학의 유산이 미약해보일 수 있다. 그 유산은 분명한 한계가 있고 비판적으로 재구성되어야 한다. 그럼에도 학현의 유산은 값진 것이며 오늘의 사회생태 경제학은 그 유산을 딛고 법고창신의 길로 나아가야 한다.

It is well known that Hakhyun(Byun, Hyung Yoon)'s economics was oriented towards a human-centered economy with distributive justice and economic democratization values at its center. However, less attention has been paid to the fact that he pursued a human-centered economy and the improvement of the public's quality of life while coexisting with the environment, and in that sense, he had an orientation towards social ecological economics. This study shows that Hakhyun's economics left behind what can be seen as a pioneer to social ecological economics in Korea. To summarize Hakhyun's legacy in a nutshell, it is to overcome inequality, injustice and move towards a social ecological alternative economy through sustainable development that coexists with the environment, which is much different from the mass consumption society. This proposal illustrates the need for an integrated pursuit of multifaceted inequality and injustice reduction, and ecological transition. The legacy of his social ecological economics may seem tenuous in the face of an unprecedented climate-ecological crisis and severe social inequality today. It needs to be further radicalized. Nevertheless, Hakhyun's legacy is much valuable, and social ecological economics in Korea today should build on it and move beyond.
