The purpose of this paper is to analyze the type of conventional implicature that can be triggered by the special particles ‘un/nun’ without relying on co-operative principle in Korean, as well as its triggering conditions. By reviewing previous research, this paper examines the plausibility of considering ‘un/nun’ as a trigger of conventional implicature. Based on the characteristics of conventional implicature, such as conventionality, non-truth conditionality, non-defeasibility, speaker subjectivity, multi-dimensionality, and dependence, the author contends that ‘un/nun’ indeed functions a trigger for conventional implicature. The analysis reveals that ‘un/nun’ can trigger exclusion implicature, explanation implicature, and approval implicature. The conditions for triggering these implicatures include forming an ad hoc category, serving as the theme of the sentence and being dependent on the state. It is very advantageous to comprehend abstract grammatical items in Korean pedagogic grammar from a pragmatics standpoint. Although the previous research has associated the special particles ‘un/nun’ with meanings and uses of topic marker, contrast, and emphasis, this notion frequently leads to confusion among Korean learners. Therefore, this paper attempts to offer a different interpretation of ‘un/nun’ by employing the concept of conventional implicature.
