A Study on Understanding Academic Text Citations and Production Models Through Logical Metafunction Analysis: Focusing on the Literature Review Section in Doctoral Theses
- 98
The purpose of this study is to analyze the logical metafunctions of citations and propose a model for understanding and producing citations, intended for foreign learners of academic Korean. To achieve this, we extracted 312 citations from the Literature Review sections of five doctoral dissertations in the field of Korean language education. The study examined the taxis and logic-semantics relations by applying the theory of logical metafunction inherent in systemic functional linguistics. The findings revealed that LR citations are not simply reporting by listing information from prior studies, but they tend to report cohesively by arranging various elements like research objectives, processes, results, and claims through diverse logico-semantic relations. Furthermore, it is found that the selection of clause complex markers often represents multiple logico-semantic relations in the same form. In such cases, the logico-semantic relations can be deduced through context elements such as properties of situations expressed in the clauses and reporting verbs. Finally, based on these analytical results, a model for understanding and producing LR citations is proposed. This study holds significance as it can provide meaningful methods and content for the educational instruction on the development of LR citations.
